in response to Schmidty...
I tend to think of myself as open, open to the wide gambit at which you have opened up to discuss. What are my views? Where do I go from and to? Well, I'll be honest. As a person, we are smart and intelligent (for the most part). We look at life with a certain pragmatism that often defers to common sense. Now inversely, as a group, we are judgmental, prideful, prejudicial, and emotional to a fault.
We are raised by different personalities, groups, and histories. These experiences have influenced our lives in an almost subconscious effect. Elderly will tend to avoid large groups of youths, often citing fears of being assaulted or bothered. People in general will turn around if they see a single dog walking their way. Children will not go into a dark room alone. These fears are created by our own experiences, as well as the experiences from those around us. They are created, in some way, by the fear of the unknown.
Can I say that I am prejudice? No, I do not believe so. As a matter of fact, I try to go out of my way to treat everybody equal. That said, my own experiences have created certain uneasy feelings when certain situations present themselves. Do I believe that the Government (City, State, Federal, etc) is trying to control us? I would be naive to say no, as to a certain degree, I believe that they are. Now, You are all probably going to yell at me here, however, here it goes.
Cause: Tickets for Speeding. Effect: Much needed revenue for municipalities, plus people don't care about others and wish to speed and do whatever, so that they can do what they want. Since these people don't understand my anger "How Dare They Put My Family At Risk So That They Can Get There 2 Minutes Sooner", so the government has to impose fines to force people to slow down.
Cause: 6 Month Moratorium on Deep Water Drilling. Effect: Please note, this is only on new drill sites. This doesn't affect existing sites, or the sites already located and under construction. These issues present themselves because the same companies we complain about having record profits continue to produce unsafe policies and guidelines that led to the worst ecological disaster recorded. We are, which includes me, a situation that leads to necessitate our need for fossil burning fuels. We live further and further from work and school, that we need to drive to survive. I get that, however, we need to save our environment for our children, which should be understandable, that we should make sure all existing and future energy production is done to the safest for us and the environment, to the best of our ability. We have the technology and foresight to do so.
Cause Financial reform: Failure of the financial industry from everybody's greediness. Effect: The necessity to create financial reform. Now, capitalism by theory is the ability to make as much as you can and run. What can I do today to make more money tomorrow. This was the main idea that came into play with default credit swaps. Everybody would and does understand what basic risk is. Would you give a person you do not know 1000.00 dollars if you knew that they had no way to pay it back or collateral to earn your money back. Of course not. Well, these companies found a way to bundle these toxic assets into valid secure funds and guarantee large returns. Think Madoff of the residential and banking industries. These companies did this, and we went blindly because we liked the returns in the good times, and never thought that it could go bad. Well, guess what, it did, and they ran away with the money, and still got bailed out. Do I believe that it's something that needed to be done, YES, however, as the saying goes, First time your fault, Second time my fault. The Government reform is needed to maintain accountability with these multinational conglomerates, and yes, to protect the greedy part of us all.
Everybody has brought up the race issue. I believe that everybody's opinion should be heard. Which is why I am writing as well. These types of conversations should be held in the open with complete transparency, as this is the only way to get an honest dialog on the table. Now this will get me really in trouble. As a Caucasian and as of the 2000 census, I am part of the minority group in the USA. Now don't hurt me, if you look at the numbers, a Caucasian in the USA accounts for 29% of the population, where the documented minority accounts for the other 71%. If you look at what the ACLU, when it was created, they did terrific and much needed work, however, look at the new cases and causes that they undertake. I challenge everybody to do this. Politicians, Businesses, and people alike are afraid of these organizations. Like all special interest groups, they are steering most of the political will of the country in their direction, and in some cases, at a detrimental cause to the local populations. Please do not get me wrong, I support the cause of the individual, however, when should that come at the cost of the majority. AGAIN, I AM NOT SPEAKING ABOUT PEOPLES INALIENABLE RIGHTS, I am speaking about something like fighting the 1st Amendment because a small group in AZ didn't like it.
When did the rights of the few outweigh the rights of the many? Even though we are a republic and not a true democracy, we still celebrate democratic principles, which is where we should try to follow. These same groups try to say they are upholding the founding fathers vision of the constitution, however, their direction have become so convoluted, and the fear from politicians have created an environment of fear. This fear has caused a government body utterly ineffective. Please research some of these as well. Whenever a new bill is proposed, is there not an automatic lawsuit, on behalf of plaintiffs they've searched out by the way, for a Cease and Desist order? Now I digress, I am complaining now.
I like where this conversation has started from. Let's open up our feelings and keep it civilized. If we start a dialog, properly respectful, maybe it will grow to new bounds and expand our understanding of each other, and hopefully the ability to respectfully agree to disagree while respecting each other even if our views are different. Besides, wasn't our country founded by different groups that, as you see today, has become the worlds largest melting pot of cultures? I love culture and learning as much as I can about each one that I come across.
C'mon, enjoy life and the diversity that it brings.
